Our stay in Yakima and trip North to Osoyoos

The purpose for going to Yakima, Washington was to meet and get to know John's family. All three of his children and his two grandsons were there at the same time! John and I both look forward to building and growing our relationship with these delightful young people. Thanks to you all for your hospitality.

Four highlights:

1- Our first evening there we went for Japanese food at New York Teriyaki with Cathy + Jack, Don & Sora + Connor. The boys good behavior, the excellent food and good conversation made for precious memories. We even were escorted to Value Village where we found some dishes we needed. How's the new ramp working out for you Jack?

2- Our visit with Don & Sora,+ Connor + Jack to the Yakima museum. http://www.yakimavalleymuseum.org/  The guys seemed to enjoy the vehicles and antique gadgets, Sora definitely wanted to take the "old wood cook stove" home with her (I think she had an eye on some of that woman's shoe collection as well), the boys engaged in Rascally Wrestling with puppet raccoons in the young peoples section and I appreciated the Land of Joy and Sorrow: Japanese Pioneers in the Yakima Valley exhibit. We all relaxed and enjoyed the sun, a great 1930's style lunch and fellowship at the museum's Soda Fountain.

3- Grumpy's Outdoor Store: We stopped in here to satisfy the "testosterone" in our group! My new Sling Shot was an instant hit with Connor and Jack! I got my practice time with it later.

4- Friday evening we were honored to stop over to visit with Cathy at home. John recognized the house but it was all new to me. I was delighted to see that Cathy likes to garden, knows a whole lot about herbs and their uses and that they were planning on homeschooling Jack for a season. A woman after my own heart!

John and Jackie left Yakima heading North toward Canada. We took the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway. It was eye boggling! Sorry! The car never stopped once for photo ops; All our photos of this drive have windshield reflections!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_State_Route_821

A Wild Horse Wind Facility along the way caught our attention. http://www.solaripedia.com/214/2494/video-viewing.html  We wonder when/how they would do with Gene Kelley's WindWings on them instead of those propellers? http://www.w2energycorp.com/

John took me on a detour over to Leavenworth. Der Ritterhof's Mascot tried to catch me for dinner. (I presume! - Why else would I be running away?) http://www.leavenworth.org/modules/pages/index.php?pageid=1

The main event in this drive was our walk-about tour of the Rocky Reach Dam. John was very impressed to find out that this Public Utility District Project was funded, built and is run without Federal government help. It came in $10 million under budget, was finished 6 months ahead of schedule, has award winning environmental components and generates a profit every year. Impressive!   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Reach_Dam

Our black '98 Pontiac Grand Prix adventure!

Last Sunday we went to Mission, car hunting; We bought a '98 Pontiac Grand Prix. The radiator ---> leaked (a 6 inch crack), it took me 4 hours to clean, it took John an hour to take the glue off from the black vinyl window coverings, a headlight was all fogged up and we discovered that the window wipers don't work. The weird noise is the tires ... it has those popular, thin tires that let you feel every bump in the road. Well, we spent yesterday morning, here in Yakima, dealing with the rad and the afternoon at the auto wreckers dealing with most of the other things. We now know how to replace the wiper motor as we did it three times! The problem is in the switch not the motor; now we plan to reroute power around the switch until we get back to Chilliwack.

What was Father-God thinking when he directed us to this car? A definite "No" on the 1st car we saw; 5 definite "No's" on the second car (Jackie liked that one!) and clear directions and a "yes, this is the one!" to finding this one! We have met some interesting people as a result of all this. We are wondering who will be the person who buys it when the time comes in late September??? We are surely having an adventure!

Off on a New Adventure

Friday evening August 3rd, John and Jackie flew from Kona to Vancouver, Canada. We are off on a new adventure! Some of you suggested larger pictures: How's this?

We are going for two months to visit friends, relatives, doctors and dentists. What places and sights will we see?
A sleepless night: Reading "Pigs in the Parlor".
One Happy Traveler: On the Canada Line or was that the Expo Line SkyTrain? We marveled at the Korean Technology, the Greenery in Vancouver and how a nice meal can revive you when you're traveling.
The Elevator and the Escalator were BOTH baracaded off ... We schlepped our Luggage  DOWN 4 flights of  stairs.

On the bus to Aldergrove. Will Richard be there to pick us up? His phone went to voicemail!

The History of a Retaining Wall Built in The Garden

In the back half of the main, fenced-in Garden, the slope of the land required some thought about what to do with it. Build raised beds across the slope? Build a retaining wall and split the back half in two?  What materials to use? Dunnage wood from the construction site? Lava Rocks? Concrete? Jackie had always wanted to try her hand at building one of those Dry Stack Lava Rock Walls which are so common all over Hawai'i Island. Work began on May 17, 2012 once my Income Tax was filed! These photos tell the story:

The Wall has begun. Work Duty Students are Leveling, Picking out rocks, Mulching and Weeding the lower half.

By June 19 progress has been made. A young friend comes to help me.

A Work Duty Student really wanted to learn how to do this.  He was a big Help; especially with the larger Rocks.

We held a Rock Wall Building Bee with some friends. The  "End Rock" is delivered.

Big Rocks, Medium Stones, then Little Pebbles. Not as easy as I had thought it would be! Very much an Art Form.

7 People hard at work! The Guys in the back are filling in with Fresh Soil; Hot and Sweaty Work!

One last Evening of work and Jackie's Wall is DONE! July 31, 1012: A 10 Week Long Project!  In the foreground you'll see the layer of  leaves to mulch and protect that Allophane Clay and Endisol Ash soil.
Go IMO's Go! Go Worms Go! Your turn to get to work!

Now that's a WALL! It is 10 feet high and 17 feet thick! How do they do that?

Trip to Kealakekua Bay to Kayak and Snorkel

On Wednesday, August 1, John & Jackie drove Neil down to Kealakekua Bay. We went to Maile's Kayak Rental and Dexter (4th generation landowner of this beautiful ocean front property) rented Jackie and Neil a double Kayak. John stayed with Dexter and they became good friends. We paddled out through a narrow passage in the dangerous lava rock, across the Bay to Captain Cook's Monument, where we beached (rocked?) the kayak and went snorkeling. Yes, this is the same place Diane and I swam across, and back, last April 18th. These photos show some of the highlights:

Neil in a dive skin and Jackie with her bag:  snack + water, snorkel gear and Neil's underwater camera.

Dexter shoves us off on our grande sea-kayak adventure.

It's a Mermaid! Jackie! But we didn't see any Dolphins.

Neil spying out the denizens of the deep -  I'm amazed this one turned out!

Captain Cook Monument - not the original -  in the background.

Jackie in the Kayak,  ready for the paddle back to civilization. No sunburn this trip - Just a pink glow!

Hike at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park

Neil Edelman is visiting us in Kona, Hawaii. On Tuesday, July 24, Neil and Jackie went on a walk through the Hawaiian Heritage site at Kalako-Honokohau, a state park. We went North along the beach. Here are some of the highlights of the day:
Hiking off towards Kalako Fish Pond
Cooling my feet in the waves on the Black Coral Sand Beach
Neil walking the wall which keeps the waves out of the fish pond
This tree, right at high tide level, has a maze of salt water worn branches; a beautiful pinkish color.
We watched as these Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles (Honu) dragged themselves up on the beach to rest.
